Saffron Walden [M4s] 6 v 0 Upminster [M4s]

Upminster 4’s were again at the wrong end of a hefty defeat away to a skilful and energetic Saffron Walden side. The team performance was however much improved during this outing, with the defence holding firm. Not much was created going forward as the visitors concentrated their efforts at keeping their hosts at bay. The midfield trio of Chris Szpak, Will Topp and Dan Harrison worked tirelessly, but as the continued pressure was applied the U’s goal was finally breached. A new found fighting spirit didn’t show signs of cracking and when Skipper Dance saved from a penalty flick, the hosts slender lead was taken into the half time break and the game very much there for the taking.

The second half didn’t pan out so well as fitness levels dropped and an injury to Ian Loman meant a quick reshuffle to the backline allowed the hosts to net a quick brace. With the game slipping away, Upminster reverted to a back three and pushed Jordan Southan into the attack. The change almost brought an immediate reaction, but Alan Ison was unfortunately denied by a good save. Louis and Ellis Pickering making their debuts worked hard throughout but with time and energy levels running out Saffron Walden netted three quick goals in succession to give them a well deserved victory.

This week Upminster 4s are playing Witham 3s at home and will look to continue to make marked improvements as the league progresses.
