Upminster [M5s] 2 v 1 Colchester [M4’s]

Upminster 5’s ended a 10 game losing streak with a resilient performance against Colchester at Emerson Park on Saturday. A cautious first half yielded few chances and no goals, in spite of the best efforts of Upminster’s midfield partnership of Will Topp and John Dunnett, to break down a tough Colchester defence. The deadlock was broken shortly after half time by the away team when a long ball deceived the Upminster defence and was dispatched to the net by Colchester’s forward.

This goal proved to galvanise Upminster, who quickly drew level through an expertly dispatched short corner routine from Lester Farrant. With the game tightly poised, a close range goal from sweeper Nick Haunton completed the comeback. In spite of sustained Colchester pressure in the final 10 minutes the defensive efforts of Messrs Robertson, Monaghan, TJ, Haunton, Carroll and Banks were decisive in securing Upminster 5s their first points of the season.
