I have been meaning to put this message together since the start of the season to introduce myself. For those of you who do not know me I have been part of Upminster Hockey Club for just over 12 years. In that time, I have had the pleasure of volunteering to help coach our fabulous colts’ section, the ladies lower XI sides as well as play for the 2nd XI team.
This season I have been given the honour of Ladies’ Club Captain and for the first time got a real appreciation of how much hard work it is for the Ladies Captains / Vice captains each week just to get us all out playing.
I wanted to give an insight into how the selection process works and what we can all do to help.
Team Selection is held every Saturday where the captains discuss the weeks fixtures/results, development of players and availability for the following weeks.
It is essential that we all give our availability (unforeseen circumstances excluded) where possible in advance of a minimum 3 weeks. With any team sport there requires a certain amount of commitment from an individual player. We are currently part of the England Hockey East Leagues which requires us playing home and away games. If there is ever an issue of transport, then let the team captain know and a lift can always be arranged. If, however you or your daughter does not wish to play on a Saturday but attend training only then please do let us know asap. This will stop any unnecessary messages and allow captains to update their respective team sheets.
Early part of the week each Team Captain contacts the player/parent/guardian to confirm selection. This is subject to change due to unforeseen circumstances; therefore, players may be moved up and down the 6 Ladies’ teams to facilitate.
This brings me onto teas and how they play a big part of Hockey etiquette. Players are encouraged to attend teas both home and away. They are an integral part of the team building and help reinforce the connection between players and the opposition. Our new Bar Managers Andrea & Tony are at the clubhouse every Saturday and cater for all dietary needs. In fact, the teas are so good I am refusing to cook on a Saturday anymore so win-win!
I hope that this all makes sense and feel that between us all we can make the captains jobs so much easier. I truly believe that we are all part of the most amazing club which is made super special by the members and players within it.
If you have any questions or concerns, please do contact me via lcc@upminsterhc.co.uk
In the meantime, thanks one and all and look forward to seeing you all on the side-line or sharing a peppermint tea in the clubhouse.
Cheers,
Kez
