Upminster [M2s] 6 v 4 Saffron Walden [M3s]

Upminster Mens 2s ran out eventual winners in a very entertaining game on Saturday against Saffron Walden Men 3s.

The game started well for Upminster, who created a lot of good early chances but couldn’t convert and were further denied when a spectacular effort from Luke Alexandrou crashed against the crossbar. With 20 mins gone a surging run from MOTM Luke Scrivener into the ‘D’ and a fine pull back saw Glen Noller score the opening goal of the game.

Saffron Walden hit back within 5 mins with a deflection after some good work down the right. The away side then took the lead after a lapse of concentration at the back allowed the Saffron Walden striker to hit home and take a rather fortunate 2-1 advantage in at the break.

Upminster came out in the 2nd half knowing that further chances would come their way if they continued to play the way they did in the 1st half. And it wasn’t long until Mike Scrivener converted from a PC and then tapped in at the far post to give the U’s the lead. The U’s continued to push forward and Phil Hudson bundled the ball over the line before Alexandrou got his goal after rounding the keeper and smashing the ball into the net. Scrivener claimed his hat-trick after some unselfish work from Noller with another back post tap in.

2 late goals for Saffron Walden gave the visitors some hope but Upminster shut up shop at the back, marshalled well from DOTM Andrew Berry to close the game out and take all 3 points.

Upminster 2’s next game is against East London for an early breakfast slot meeting at the Mile End stadium.
